The Po Lin Monastery was established in 1972. The monks and nuns who reside here led a peaceful existence until the 1970`s, when the temple was opened to the public. Since then they`ve seen swarms of tourists visit. The main reason being the awesome Tian Tan buddha statue, which looks down serenely over the surrounding area. At nearly 250 tonnes, it is the largest seated outdoor bronze buddha statue in the world.
To reach the Po Lin Monastery, take the ferry to Lantau from the Outerlying Island ferry pier and catch the bus to the monastery from the bus terminus. Alternatively, take the MTR to Tung Chung station and take the cable car to the monastery.
